The Power of Positive Affirmations: Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Have you heard about the power of positive affirmations?

Now, you might be wondering, “What are positive affirmations and what are they good for?”

Think of positive affirmations as little cheerleaders for your brain. They’re short, upbeat messages you repeat to yourself.

Why do this, you ask?

Well, do you ever feel like your brain’s got a mind of its own?

You know, those negative thoughts that just randomly pop up and try to drag you down?

Well, guess what?

You’re not alone!

Everyone has those kinds of thoughts going through their head. The average person has up to 60,000 thoughts per day and a whopping 80% of those thoughts are negative.

And all those negative thoughts can make you feel like there is something wrong with you, fully deflating your self-esteem and confidence.

But there’s good news.

Today you’re going to learn how to fight back – using positive affirmations.

But first, let me give you a better understanding of these awesome mind hacks work.

The Science Behind Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are more than just feel-good statements. These mind hacking tools are backed by real science rooted in how our brains work. Understanding this science helps us see how affirmations can positively impact our lives.

Neuroplasticity is a key concept. It’s the brain’s ability to change and rewire itself by making new connections.

This means your brain’s ability isn’t fixed. It can adapt and learn throughout your life.

When you repeat positive affirmations consistently, you’re training your brain to think differently. This creates new neuro pathways, making it easier for positive thoughts to flow naturally.

Think of it like carving a path through a forest. The more you walk on it, the clearer and easier it becomes.

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is another important part of this process. This network of neurons acts like a filter for all the information our senses take in.

It decides what reaches your conscious awareness. By focusing on positive affirmations, you’re directing your RAS to pay attention to experiences and opportunities that match those statements.

It’s like setting a GPS. When you enter a destination, it guides you towards the best routes while ignoring irrelevant paths. In this case, your RAS filters out negativity and brings your attention to positive things that support your goals.

Our brains have a natural tendency toward what is called a confirmation bias. This means you, and everyone else, look for information that confirms what you already believe, while ignoring or downplaying anything that contradicts it.

This bias can work for you and against you. When you start to adopt positive affirmations, your brain begins looking for evidence to support these statements. This can create a self-fulfilling prophecy effect.

If you repeatedly tell yourself “I am confident and capable,” your mind will actively seek out situations where you display confidence and capability, reinforcing this belief further.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the science behind positive affirmations, let’s see how you start using them.

Start With a Little Self-Reflection

Before you start, you’ll need to take time for some self-reflection. You want to figure out the best way to put the power of positive affirmations to work for you.

So you’ve got to do a little soul-searching. We all have those little “oops, got to work on that” areas, right?

Think of it as a personal growth opportunity.

Maybe you’re a master of the “I’ll do it later” game, or perhaps you have a chat with your inner critic every morning.

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

Maybe you’re a champion at saying “yes” when you really want to say “no”.

Or maybe your healthy eating habits are about as consistent as a summer breeze.

No judgment here!

Instead, use the power of positive affirmations to turn those weaknesses into opportunities.

Think of it as a DIY upgrade for your life!

What’s Your Most Important Positive Affirmation?

Now, let’s talk about how to prioritize those pesky weaknesses.

It’s like tackling a messy closet. You got to know what to toss out first.

Here’s the deal:

First, do an impact assessment.

Think of your weaknesses as party crashers.

Who’s causing the most chaos?

Which ones are really messing with your happiness, goals, or relationships? Time to get those crashers out of there!

Second, do an urgency evaluation.

Some weaknesses are like a leaky faucet, they’re annoying, but not an immediate crisis.

Others are like an overflowing toilet; you’ve got to handle these ASAP!

Prioritize the ones that could turn into major headaches if left unchecked.

Third, ask, how they align with your goals?

Imagine your goals as a delicious cake.  Which weaknesses are preventing you from getting a slice?

Focus on those first. You don’t want to miss out on all that deliciousness.

Fourth, what kind of resources are we talking about?

Some weaknesses, like learning how to deal with criticism, can require a lot of effort. Others, like setting reminders on your phone, are quicker fixes.

Prioritize the ones you can realistically tackle with the time and energy you have.

And finally, number five, what is their personal significance?

Some weaknesses might be annoying, but they don’t really bug you. Others are like a nail sticking in your shoe that poking into the bottom of your foot. You’ve got to get rid of them!

Prioritize the ones that truly matter to you and your well-being.

Keep in mind that personal growth is a marathon, not a sprint.

Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t tackle every weakness at once.

Just keep moving forward, one step at a time!

The Power of Positive Affirmations Starts With the 4 P’s

Now, that you know how to prioritize, it’s affirmation creation time!

Begin with the four “Ps”.

You want to make your affirmation positive, in the present tense, personal, and involve your physiology.

“I work out five days a week,” is an example of an affirmation that is positive, in the present tense and personal. To include your physiology, pump your fists in the air as you say your positive affirmation out loud.

Creating You Positive Affirmations

Now, let’s craft some positive affirmations that will make you feel like a superhero!

Here are some examples you can use to start with.

Dealing with skepticism is like trying to convince a cat that it needs a bath, challenging, but not impossible. It’s totally normal to feel uncomfortable when you start dipping your toes into the affirmation pool.

And let’s face it. It can be easy to feel like a goofball as you repeat affirmations that seem as real as a talking potato at first.

Yet, with time, those seemingly outlandish phrases will start to work their magic, shifting your mindset and behavior in ways you never saw coming.

And if you need some backup in this affirmation adventure, just look at what scientists like Dr. Carol Dweck have to say. Her research on how believing in yourself can do wonders for your personal growth provides proof that positive affirmations can work, if you’ll use consistently them.

Consistency is Key!

For your affirmations to take hold and make a difference, consistency is essential. Regular practice ensures that these positive statements become deeply ingrained in your subconscious mind so they can override your old programming.

Apps designed for affirmations can also help you stay on track. A few are ThinkUp, Shine and Grateful.  If you find one you like, use it!

The key takeaway is keep practicing no matter what kind of initial resistance or doubt you have. This builds resilience and strengthens your belief in their power.

And remember, you’ve got to mix it up!

Read them, say them out loud, visualize them, record them, or repeat them silently.

Find what works for you and sprinkle those affirmations into your day like confetti!
