Look for things that can help you boost your self-image, like deeper relationships and giving back to the community.

3.“I don’t have a choice.”

The first thing to remember is you always have an unlimited number of options available at any time. While you might not feel brave or capable enough to consider them, you do have options.

You might think that it’s unrealistic to change jobs because you have no other options. However, if you examine this belief, you may find that it’s not really true.

Ask yourself, “What’s the worst that can happen if I share my thoughts? Will they chuck me into the nearest trash can or start a ‘We Hate So-and-So’ club?”

Probably not. Most people are too busy worrying about their own jokes and opinions to care that much about yours.

6. “I’m limited in my ability to accomplish anything.”

Some say that walking and talking are feats of sheer brilliance, to which no other accomplishment can compare.

You might find yourself wondering: “But everyone can do that!”

True—and therein lies the true mark of your greatness. You can learn anything, just like you learned to walk and talk.  

People with low self-esteem often put boundaries on themselves. But thinking you’re limited basically boxes yourself in. And let’s be real, boxes are meant for packing, not living. 

So don’t create self-imposed barricades on your path in life. Instead of believing that you can’t do something, focus on building your self-esteem. Spend time with people who make you feel better by helping you expand your skills, knowledge, and mindset. 

Give yourself some credit and trust that, with the right input and guidance, you can overcome your limitations. This is true even in the most difficult situations. 

Remember, success is not a one-size-fits-all kind of deal. What might be a huge success to one person may not be to another. 

For example, for most people, running a marathon in 4 hours would be an enormous achievement.  If the world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, ran it in 4 hours, everyone would say, “So what?”  

So, don’t go comparing yourself to others, okay? Channel your inner badass and go after goals that you’re passionate about and that align with your values. Do this on a day-to-day basis.

You may have a few issues to resolve, but your inherent capability isn’t one of them.

  1. “I can change him (or her).”

One thing taught in basic psychology classes is you can’t change other people or things. You can only change yourself.

Think about how hard it is to change yourself, even when you want to change. Now imagine how difficult it is to change someone else.

This doesn’t mean you need to simply cope with their negative habits or behaviors. This will only adversely affect your mental health. 

Instead, speak up. If possible, try to work through it together. You can’t control their actions, but you can control your reactions and choices. By speaking up you are learning to be assertive, which will boost your self-image and confidence.

Save yourself the headache and accept your partner for who they are. After all, they’re probably putting up with your quirks too.
