Why do I think setting daily goals is so important?

Well, I have a confession to make, I used to struggle accomplishing goals. I found when I had a larger goal, like writing a book, after a while I’d get overwhelmed and discouraged.

Then I’d stop working on it.

For a while this was a recurring pattern, until I learned what we are going to talk about today, creating attainable daily goals.

Let me ask, do you have big dreams and aspirations in life that you find yourself struggling to achieve? For example, goals like losing a certain amount of weight, becoming a leader at work can be hard to make happen, especially when they seem far away. 

If this is something you are going through and you’re determined to create tangible changes in your life, there is a proven way to achieve them.  You can start creating smaller goals every day to help you make progress. 

This method will help you set effective daily goals that will keep you motivated and on track.  

The Importance of Setting Daily Goals 

My book, Mastering the Mind, Body and Spirit, examines the three types of goals we need to create to be successful. Effective goals have long-term, medium-term, and short-term components.

Long-term goals are your ultimate outcome, such as a certain income or writing a book. They are what you are ultimately aiming to achieve.

Medium-term goals are milestones. These are goals that give you feedback about your progress and help you stay on track.

Short-term goals are the daily actions you need. These goals are important because they build up to your long-term objectives.

While you need to keep track of your long-term objectives, setting daily goals and achieving them keeps you moving toward your destination. These daily goals are important for your success. 

Let’s take a look at the benefits of setting daily goals and how you can use them to achieve almost anything.

Benefits of Setting Daily Goals:

1. Small goals keep you focused.

Life can sometimes get in the way of bigger-picture plans. Your daily responsibilities may feel like they’re overshadowing your long-term goals and objectives.

This is understandable but it doesn’t have to be the case.

Setting specific daily goals can help to keep your hopes and ambitions in focus while still allowing you to accomplish your day-to-day duties. This lets you be faithful to your daily responsibilities while still working on your personal goals.

2. Setting daily goals breaks down big goals into bite-sized pieces.

Just like you wouldn’t eat a 12- ounce steak with one bite, you won’t be able to accomplish a big goal in one sitting. Setting goals on a daily basis helps you break big projects into smaller, achievable tasks. Pick out one or two goals you can actually complete each day. As you build your momentum, you will find that it’s easier to actually achieve your larger ones.

3. Creates urgency

What happens when your deadline is 3 months from now? As a college professor, I can assure you that for most people, nothing will happen until a few days before the assignment is due.

Like the college student, having a goal that’s due far from now will not get you to do anything. To reduce your natural tendency to procrastinate, setting goals you need to accomplish each day will create a tighter timeline that will motivate you to focus on moving down the path toward your goal.

4. Helps you to adapt faster.

The crazy thing about objectives is as you work towards achieving them, they can change shape. This will require you to revise your goals or change your strategy. Setting daily goals helps you operate in the 24-hour time zone. This will help you to resolve conflicts before they grow into serious challenges.

Now let’s look at how you use setting daily goals to achieve your big goals:

1. Before you set goals, take the time to clarify your values.

What do you want to accomplish in your life? This core question is vital to your success and is a key component of the goals setting process found in my book, Mastering the Mind, Body, and Spirit.

If you want to work at a peak level, you need to know what you want. You need to create compelling goals that align with your core values. Take time to contemplate what you really want out of life and then create your goals around what you want.

2. Work on things you’re good at.

While everyone should work on improving themselves, your goals should leverage what you’re strong at. This means designing goals that take advantage of your talents and skills. Figure out what you like to do and the things you do well. Understanding your abilities will help you to create realistic targets that will motivate you.

 By focusing on your talents and skills, you can design goals that are more meaningful and enjoyable to pursue. This can also increase the likelihood of your success. 

To determine your strengths, reflect on past experiences and think about the activities that bring you the most satisfaction and fulfillment. By understanding what you enjoy and excel at, as you work toward achieving your bigger goals, you’ll never feel like what you’re doing is unachievable. 

3. Focus on what you want.

Many people focus on things they don’t want.

When asked about their goals, many people will say, “I don’t want to _______.”

Instead of thinking about what you don’t want, identify something you DO want and then create positive self-talk that motivate you to work toward your goals. This approach helps to create a positive mindset and can motivate you to continue working towards your goals. 

Focusing on what you don’t want can lead to negative self-talk. This can cripple your motivation because you won’t be inspired by something you don’t want.

On the other hand, focusing on what you do want allows you to create a clear and positive vision for yourself. This can boost your motivation and help you stay focused on your goals.

4. Engage in outcome-based thinking

When you use outcome-based thinking, you decide on the desired result and then develop a plan to achieve it. This helps you stay focused on the tasks on your list. 

By identifying your end result, you can create a step-by-step plan to take you there. For example, when writing and publishing a book, you might want to create a timeline and then set aside dedicated writing time each day. You might also look for other resources, like beta readers and an editor.

This process is a powerful personal development tool that will help you stay focused and motivated as you work towards your goals.

5. Write it down.

 When goals are only kept in your mind, they are easy to change and quickly neglected or forgotten. 

Writing down your goals makes them real. It also provides you with a constant reminder of what you want to achieve. 

When you put your goals somewhere you can easily refer to them, you can track your progress. This will help you stay motivated, and adjust your plan as needed.

Writing down your goals increases your motivation and serves as a visual representation of your commitment to achieving them. Whether it be through an app or using paper and pen, writing down your goals will help increase your accountability and stay on track.

6. Avoid distractions.

Distractions are a common challenge for many people. Although unavoidable, they negatively impact your productivity, focus, and motivation. 

There are ways you can minimize the impact of distractions and, instead, focus on the daily goals you set.

First, limit the number of times you check your phone each day. This is especially critical while working on important goals.

Clearing the clutter off your desk also works to minimize distractions. It also creates a more organized and conducive work environment that can help you achieve your goals.

Additionally, turning off social media and the TV will help to reduce your temptation to engage in non-productive activities. By making slight adjustments to your habits and environment, you’ll be able to better focus on your important work.

7. Take regular breaks.

On the other hand, taking some time to rest your brain is important too.  Taking regular breaks is essential for your mental and physical well-being.  It can also help to reduce stress and prevent burnout.

While a break in mid-morning and mid-afternoon is optimal, it’s important to find what works for you. During break time, it’s important to shift your attention away from work and engage in activities that allow you to move your body.

Some examples are stretching, taking a walk, or doing light exercises. Activities like these can help refresh your mind and replenish your energy levels. This will allow you to return to work with heightened focus and motivation. 

8. Learn from feedback.

There will be times when you don’t achieve what you set out to accomplish. When this happens, it can be easy to become discouraged and view the situation as a failure.

Instead, reframe this by focusing on what you can learn from the experience. The feedback you receive from setbacks and challenges can help you to improve your performance. It can also help you make better decisions in the future if you let it. .

By taking responsibility for your decisions and focusing on what can be done differently in the future, you’re using setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning. Ultimately, this will lead to better results.

High-performing athletes understand feedback is key to enhancing their performance. Of course, this principle applies to other areas of life as well.

When you view setbacks as opportunities for learning, you’ll increase your resilience, develop a growth mindset, and achieve your goals and tasks more effectively.

 9. Create rewards.

Incentives can be a terrific way to renew your enthusiasm.  They can provide a motivation boost when you’re unenthusiastic or feel stuck.

Pick a treat that excites you. Then associate it with reaching your goals.

For example, you might reward yourself with a new pair of shoes or a weekend getaway for completing a milestone. Having something tangible to look forward to when you achieve that goal will renew your enthusiasm and provide the motivation you need to keep working.

Rewarding yourself can be a fantastic way to stay motivated and engaged, especially when you feel like you’re in a slump. These rewards will give you a sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence, helping you to maintain your focus and drive.

10. Ask for help.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, can accomplish remarkable things all by themselves.  It’s important to recognize that we all need support and help along the way.

By asking people in your network for constructive feedback and support, you can gain valuable insights and ideas. Look for someone who is trying to accomplish something similar. Working with a partner can provide a sense of accountability and help to keep you motivated. It can also provide opportunities for learning, growth, and mutual support.

Having a partner who understands the challenges and obstacles you face allows you to collaborate with them while holding each other accountable.

11. Practice self-care.

Nobody wants to be the richest person in the graveyard. Practicing self-care is essential to maintain good physical and mental health. It will also improve your chances of success.

Taking care of your physical and psychological strength ensures you have the energy and focus you need. Regular exercise and eating a balanced diet help manage stress levels, boost your immune system, and improve overall health.

Additionally, getting plenty of sleep is crucial for rejuvenation and maintaining a healthy state of mind. Aiming for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night is a good goal for most people, and it can help you to perform at your best during the day.

Practicing self-care allows you to build resilience and develop the strength and energy needed to succeed. 

Setting Daily Goals is Not Just for Increased Productivity 

Setting daily goals isn’t just about getting more done.

Thinking it through and connecting your goals with your core values will positively affect your overall happiness, making you an even better person to be around.
