Maximize Your Productivity With Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to what you are doing right now. Some of the benefits of mindfulness include a calmer mind, a better immune system, and an overall feeling of wellbeing. But did you know that you can also use mindfulness to maximize your productivity at work?

Many major corporations, including Nike and Apple, are offering mindfulness programs to their employees during the Covid 19 pandemic. It’s also part of the curriculum at Harvard Business School.

You too can use mindfulness to maximize your productivity. In this article, you’ll discover how increasing your awareness can transform your work productivity and your life.

4 Benefits of Mindfulness

1.     You’ll feel happier.

Worries exist in the future, regret lies in the past. By staying in the moment and giving your full attention to what you’re doing, you are opening up yourself to being happier and more content. Instead of focusing on material possessions or external events, you appreciate who you are now and what you’ve already have.

2.     Be healthier.

As mentioned above, the advantages of mindfulness aren’t just in your head. Studies show that cultivating awareness can decrease your stress and anxiety.  This can lead to lower blood pressure, better general health and an enhanced ability to deal with illness.

3.     Improve your communications.

When you listen mindfully, you enhance your communications. This will ease conflicts, making them easier to resolve. Mindfulness helps develop compassion. This enhances cooperation with others. By listening mindfully, you can speak more tactfully and directly.

4.     Maximizes your productivity.

As you practice mindfulness, you will notice an increase in your productivity. Not only does mindfulness make you feel better, it also sharpens your thinking. Staying in the moment enhances your cognitive abilities and helps you to perform better even when you’re under pressure.

How to Develop Mindful Work Awareness

1.     Take time to meditate every day.

When you take time to meditate daily, you are training your mind to be more in the present.  Begin each day with a short meditation session. Then increase the time you meditate gradually as your ability to concentrate increases.

2.     Decide why you work.

Why do you work? What makes your work meaningful to you?

Answering these questions will help you focus on the parts of your work that attracted you to it in the first place.  Do you enjoy helping customers and creating customer satisfaction? Maybe you like having the ability to express your creativity. Find out what it is and focus on it.

3.     Slow down.

The problem with rushing is it makes you feel stressed and anxious. It also causes you to make more mistakes.

Instead of rushing when you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a step back. Give yourself a moment to clear your mind. Now, review your priorities.

Another great way to maximize your productivity is to take a short break between tasks. This will help you start the next tasks refreshed.

If you run into a challenging situation, take a break. This will give you the space you need to look for different options before you respond.

4.     Connect with all your senses.

While we have at least five senses, most people pay most of their attention to sight.  As you experience your environment, involve all your senses.

To enhance hearing, close your eyes and listen to the sounds of your office. Let your feet feel the ground through your shoes as you sit in your chair. If there is room, place a brightly colored pillow near you to look at when you need a break. You can enhance your sense of smell by leaving a jar of cinnamon sticks open to create a pleasant scent.

5.     Seek instruction.

Mindfulness could come easily for you, but many practitioners find it helpful to have a coach or receive help from other sources. To help, you can read a book, like Modern Mindfulness or sign up for a class, like my 5-Day Mindfulness Challenge.
