How to Stay Positive and Motivated

People who are positive and motivated get things done.

Think for a moment about your own life. When do you accomplish the most?

Is it when you’re thinking about all the negativity in the world or when you’re focused on the positive things life can bring?

I’m sure you’d agree it’s when you concentrate on the good things in your life.

So today, let’s examine why it’s important to be positive and motivated and how you can bring more positivity into your life.

How the World Affects Your Motivation

The world can be full of negativity. If you read the news, watch the television, or look at your social media feed, you are constantly bombarded with negative information.

All this negativity can turn a slightly troublesome situation into an overwhelming event. Over time, this will fill your mind with disempowering images that can send you into a never-ending downward spiral of hopelessness.

This is why it’s so important to find ways to stay positive and motivated. So when you’re faced with unpleasant events, or just the day to day grind life can bring, you won’t feel overwhelmed and hopeless.

Why motivation doesn’t last

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily”.Zig Ziglar

Maybe you, like many people, read a motivational book or watch an inspiring video and then decided to implement a new habit only to find yourself giving up on it after a few days.

What’s going on here? Why does this happen?

Why did you get motivated and inspired at first with all these great plans and ideas but then after a short while just stop going after them?

Part of this has to do with the distractions you will always run into while living a normal life. These distractions can water down your focus. When you combine them with the negativity we talked about above, it can make it very difficult to stay on track.

So, what can you do to stay positive and motivated?

You can ask yourself questions.

Three questions you can ask to stay positive and motivated

Every morning, ask yourself this question. Write your answers in you journal.

“What do I want to accomplish today?”

As you go through your day, look at the answer to the first question and then ask yourself, “What can I do, right this moment, that will help me achieve my goals?”

Now start working on your answer.

At the end of the day, ask yourself this final question, “What did I do today that will get me closer to accomplishing my goals?”

Note your answers in your journal.

Honestly answering these questions will keep you focused, positive and motived. It will also help you develop the kind of mindset needed to better succeed.

Let’s look at some tips that can help you understand what motivates you.

Self-improvement tips that will help you stay motivated and positive:

1.    Stop feeding your distractions.

There are lots of distractions in life. As we mentioned before, the problem with all these daily disturbances is they can easily lead you to a place where nothing ever gets done.

These can be disruptions caused by people, like a coworker with their juicy gossip. It can be that latest adorable cat video or reality TV show. It can even be that new snack food you bought after seeing it advertised during that show.

It’s easy to find things that will capture your attention and keep you from focusing on what you should be doing.

Instead, make a list of what usually distracts you and develop a plan to help you deal with them when you feel their call.

The bottom line is when you stop feeding your distractions, you’ll create more time for yourself.

2.    Schedule Me time.

A great way to stay positive and motivated is to practice self-care. Every day schedule time in your calendar for yourself.

The first time slot should be in the morning when you’re free of distractions. This might mean that you need to get up a little earlier than you are used to, so you won’t overlap with your family morning duties.

You also might schedule fifteen minutes around lunchtime or the early afternoon where you don’t answer calls, scroll through social media, or respond to emails.

You could even take a few moments to decompress by practicing mindfulness meditation.

In order to stay positive and motivated, you need to take time for yourself. Even if it is only 5 minutes, it can make a huge difference.

3.    Visualize success.

Visualization is a powerful method for becoming and staying positive and motivated and it only takes a little time each day. Every morning or evening, take a few minutes to imagine what it would be like for you to succeed.

How would you feel?

What would success look like?

What would people be telling you?

Spend some time thinking about how good you’ll feel when you conquer your present challenges.

4.    Hang around positive-minded people.

Sometimes you need a little extra spark to help you get through the day. This is where surrounding yourself with people who are positive and motivated come in.

Positive people will build you up when you’re feeling down. They’ll come up with creative ideas. They’ll listen without judgement.

They will fill your mind with the kind of positive thoughts that help you keep your chin up, no matter what challenges you’re facing.

5.    Reward yourself.

One of the best ways to stay positive, motivated and on track is to set small milestones to complete and then finishing what you set out to do when you said you would do it. For example, completing an assignment by a certain time of the day on the day it is due.

When you succeed, reward yourself. This can be something like watching a funny YouTube video or buying a cup of coffee from your favorite shop.

Your reward doesn’t always need to involve money or be time-consuming. Simple things can do wonders.

For example, stand up and tell yourself “I am awesome” or something similar.

You’ll be amazed at all the positive feelings doing this will provide you.

6.    Help others.

It is easier to stay positive and motivated when you selflessly help another person. Not only do you help them move closer to something that is important to them, it also brings you feelings of joy.

You can stay positive and motivated:

While many people struggle to stay motivated and positive these days, you don’t have to be one of them.

By scheduling me time, visualizing success, and hanging around positive people, you can choose to stay more positive and motivated every day. Use these tips daily to help you overcome the distractions and negativity that surrounds you while creating a happier and more motivated life.
