I love martial arts. I’ve been studying martial arts since 1967. Its study has been at the center of much of what I’ve done for most of my adult life. I believe it’s one of the habits that can transform your life. 

A powerful benefit of training in martial arts is it helps people learn to set goals. One goal of nearly everyone who studies martial arts is becoming a black belt.

While there can be many reasons that people have this goal, over time, the outcome most people who continue to train have is to gain control over their mind, body, and spirit.

The reason they practice martial arts is to help them transform their life.

They accomplish this by developing the habits needed to move them from where they are presently to where they want to be–a black belt.

Maybe you don’t want to become a black belt, and that’s okay. The following five habits can transform your life . They can give you the ability to succeed at whatever you want.

1. Take charge of your wake-up time.

One of the simplest and most effective changes that you can make is the time you wake up. Making this one change can have an enormous impact on how your day will go.

Make a habit of going to bed and waking up earlier. Train your body to wake up at the same time each day.

Doing this will give you more time and energy. It also starts your day out on a positive note.

Plus, you can enjoy your morning coffee in peace!

2. Create and follow a daily schedule.

Adopting this is the one habit can completely transform your life.

Either the night before or first thing in the morning, take some time to schedule out your day.

By creating a daily schedule, you are focusing your mind on your priorities.

This focus will help to eliminate distractions. It will also help you decide which things are most important for you to work on.

A schedule gives your day structure. It clearly sets what tasks need to be accomplished each day.

This is very helpful for preventing you from feeling burned out or overwhelmed, especially when those unexpected tasks pop up.

3. Set deadlines (this habit will absolutely transform your life).

What would happen if a professor didn’t set a deadline for a class assignment?

As a college professor, I can tell you that, if there isn’t a deadline, students will wait until the end of a semester to turn it in.

The same applies to you. If you don’t set a deadline, you’ll simply put off doing whatever needs to be done.

Having a deadline focuses your mind on the tasks at hand. This focus provides the stress you need to achieve your goals.

This stress is good for you because it pushes you to perform the work. It gives you the motivation you need to accomplish the tasks you’ve set out for you to do.

It also helps reduce procrastination.

Challenge yourself to accomplish the tasks you’ve put on your schedule by a certain deadline each day. When you accomplish it, you’ll feel amazing!

Setting deadlines helps you remain accountable to yourself for your daily actions. This constant self-monitoring is a habit that will help you transform your life.

4. Move your body.

As a human, you weren’t designed for a sedentary lifestyle. So, write time times in your schedule each day to move and exercise.

You can use technology to help.

Set an alarm on your phone or smartwatch to remind you to get out of your chair every 30 minutes. At midmorning, lunch, and midafternoon, set an alarm to remind you to take a walk. You might make your lunchtime walk outside for 20 or 30 minutes.

At home you can stretch or do or light calisthenics. You might try out a tai chi or yoga class, anything to get your body moving.  

Having a healthy, fit body is crucial for enjoying your life as the years go by.

You don’t have to become a fitness fanatic to transform your life. The key is to make a habit of being as active as possible throughout the day.

Exercise daily, it will transform your life and your health.  

5. Practice self-care.

Did you know you are in business for yourself?

You are.

It doesn’t matter if you have only one client, working for a single employer, or have many clients, you are working for YOU Inc.

In YOU Inc., you are the most important asset that you have. To keep YOU Inc. in business, it is essential that you to take care of yourself before anyone else.

While this might seem counterintuitive, it is extremely important for keeping yourself healthy, well, and strong.

Every day, take time for yourself. Watch a movie, listen to a concert, go to a play, or just enjoy the sounds of silence.

Don’t make work your whole life.

It’s important to ensure that you have projects that are just for you, no matter how much you love your job. This will help you keep your inner spark alive and passion for life in your soul.

Taking care of you will make you feel better and will transform your life!
