1. Limit your exposure to the news and social media
The news and social media are businesses. The purpose of a business is to make a profit. The way they make money is to keep you involved. That’s why you’ll find so much controversy in both. While it’s important to stay aware of what’s happening in the world, you don’t have to bombard yourself with negative information day and night.
If you spend too much time consuming news and social media, you’ll have little time for the really important things in life, like family and friends and other real people.
2. Get rid of life suckers
Get rid of people who suck your life out of you. You know the kind of people I’m talking about. These are the people who take up a lot of your brain space without giving anything back. Life suckers.
Life suckers are optional, and you’ll be better off without them! So, as you examine the people in your life, ask yourself, “Does this person add to my life?”
If the answer is yes, realize how lucky you are to have them in your life. If the answer is “no”, then why bother keeping them around?”
So, get rid of the life suckers. Be willing to let go of the people that take more time and effort than what they add to your life.
3. Write things down
This one Mindful Mind Hack will help you in two ways. First, you won’t wake up in the night thinking “what am I forgetting?” Second, you will stop forgetting things and then beating yourself up for forgetting.
Trying to remember things puts a huge burden on your mind. You can never truly relax when you are constantly asking your mind to remember something. Stop it!
Instead, write things down. Use alarms. Knowing that something else will keep track of your obligations for you will allow you to use your mind for the most important thing you can use it for, thinking. It will also allow your mind to relax.
Remember all that stuff you’ve heard about multi-tasking? Forget about it! Studies show it’s ineffective and creates stress.
Instead, limit yourself to doing one task at a time. When you finish, move on to the next. You’ll feel better and get a lot more accomplished.
Try doing one task at a time and focus all of your attention on that task for a day. Notice how much better you feel both while working and at the end of the day.
5. Remove unnecessary activities from your life.
These activities could be the committees you serve on, the sports teams you play on, or going out on every Thursday night to play bridge. It could also be accordion or ballroom dancing lessons.
Examine your activities and determine if they actually add to your life. You might find you would be better off with one less committee meeting or dropping your accordion lessons that you’re not enjoying all that much.
While it’s good to stay busy, it’s not good to try to cram too much into each and every day. Cutting these activities out of your life will give you the gift of time.
6. Declutter your environment
Since I got this idea from Marie Kondo, I couldn’t leave this one out. As she points out, your mind and inner peace are affected by your environment. Your environment includes your home, workspace, and anywhere else you spend a significant amount of time.

Mindfulness meditation might be the ultimate way to declutter your mind and enjoy inner peace. Mindfulness is simply paying attention to what you are doing as you are doing it. It is meditating on what is happening right now, right before your eyes, instead of the past or future.
Mindfulness meditation is very simple but challenging as well. However, it’s possible to receive many benefits from meditation even if you’re a beginner. By learning to move your focus into the present moment, you relate to the past and the future differently. Also, any habitual unhelpful thinking you have about the past or future will start to lose its power over you. This allows you to receive the gifts only the present can bring.
