Biohacking for Beginners

Have you heard about biohacking? It is a popular topic right now. If you haven’t heard the term before, biohacking is manipulating your body, brain, and environment to optimize your physical and mental performance. The term involves a variety of methods, some more benign than others, from gene therapy to mega dosing vitamins to sleep manipulation.

Types of Biohacking

There are many complicated and expensive biohacks. In fact, there’s one where an older person pays $8,000 to have a young person’s blood pumped into their veins (not exactly what I’m looking for). In this case, the older person hopes to slow aging.

While that may seem extreme to you (as it does to me) there are a few simple but effective biohacking techniques that are suitable for beginners that are free or nearly so.

Use these biohacking strategies to perform at a higher level:

1.    The elimination diet

An elimination diet is simple, but extremely powerful. What you do is eliminate a specific food from your diet and note the result in your journal. Later you can add the food back into your diet to verify its effects on you.
If you’re like most people, you eat fewer foods than you think. This means there’s an excellent chance that at least one of them is having a negative impact on your body and it will be easy to track down. Eliminating just one irritating food can have a huge impact on your life.

2.    Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation can be challenging, yet simple and extremely rewarding. It is also one of the oldest forms of biohacking.

Mindfulness meditation is simply paying attention to what you are doing when you are doing it, whether you are brushing your teeth or talking to your significant other or children. Its purpose is to help you stay in the moment. Mindfulness helps you control your thinking and emotions, which can lead to a happier, healthier and more success-filled life.

The internet offers many sources you can use to learn mindfulness meditation, from YouTube videos with guided meditations to books like mine on Amazon. You can also get a great introduction to Mindfulness by taking my 5-Day Mindfulness Challenge by clicking HERE.

3.    Caffeine

Caffeine is a substance that most people have used to heighten their awareness. I will admit I use caffeine regularly. It is a great biohacking tool because it increases focus and endurance with little side effects, when taken in the proper amounts.

It’s drawback is it is a drug and can be addicting. If used improperly, it can also cause insomnia and make you irritable. While you need to use caffeine responsibly, it is definitely a very effective, simple and (if used at home) inexpensive biohacking method you can use to boost your performance.

4.    Intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting is simply limiting your calorie intake to a specific window of time each day. This window is typically between one and eight hours. For example, you only eat between 7 AM and 3 PM. The rest of the time, you limit your intake to non-caloric beverages.
Intermittent fasting does a number of great things for your body. It can help lower your body weight and increases your insulin sensitivity. It also increases autophagy, which is a natural cleansing process where cells essentially “eat” themselves.

5.    Music

Music has amazing effects on the body and mind. You can use music to change your mood, your pulse rate, blood pressure, focus, and many other things. You probably are already familiar with the effects certain songs or styles of music have one you. Some can make you feel energized, while others make you feel calm and relaxed.

You can use music as a simple but effective biohacking tool.

Make a list of your favorite songs and then note the effects each has on you. What songs to bring you up when you’re feeling down?

What songs make you feel so energized that you feel you could take on a room full of professional boxers?

What song relaxes you the most?

Now make a playlist for each.

6.    Cold Therapy

Cold therapy can be sitting in a cold tub of water, taking a cold shower, or simply sitting outside in cold weather while underdressed. You can use this biohack to stress your body in a positive way. Your body becomes stronger by dealing with that stress. Just be sure you don’t overdo it.
Note: You can also use exercise and intermittent fasting bring a similar positive stress to your body. When using the right limits, stress can be a powerful tool for helping you grow both physically and mentally.

7.    Sauna.

Used mindfully, heat can be another positive stressor for your body. A short sit in the sauna or hot tub on a regular basis can enhance your health. It is also an excellent way to sweat out some of the impurities in your body. The best thing is that, unlike biohacking with cold therapy, the experience of a sauna feels good.
