7 Ways to Incorporate Movement into Your Life

According to a statista.com poll, the number one New Year’s resolution for Americans for 2023 was improving their health. These people resolved to exercise more (52%), eat healthier (50%) and to lose weight (40%).

All these people have vowed to make living a healthier lifestyle a reality this year, but very few of these will achieve this.

Why?

While there are several reasons people give for failing to maintain their resolution, the number one excuse is a lack of time.

So, if you’re one of those that has made your health a priority this year, then let’s make it easier by showing you how to incorporate movement into your life.

Time Struggles

Staying in peak physical health can be a challenge when you’re trying to juggle multiple responsibilities, like family and work. Fortunately, there are several ways to fit movement into your daily routine without spending too much time or effort.

Use these tips to incorporate more movement into your life:

1. Create a commute.

An easy way to add some exercise to your daily routine is to create an exercise commute. This is easy if you head out to work each day.

If you take the bus, get off the bus one stop early. If you drive, park a little way from your office. Ideally, you can walk to work and back.

If these don’t work, then each morning, before you hit the desk, head out of the house, walk around the block, and then get in the car and head to work.

Use an app or smartwatch to count the steps that you take on your commute. It will keep you motivated, and you’ll be amazed at how much of a workout you get!

  1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

This is a little addition to the first tip and is another way to incorporate movement into your life and get a few more steps. It’s an easy way to get some extra movement in and burns more calories than taking an elevator. Plus, it’ll get your heart rate up and help build stamina over time!

3. Invest in a standing desk.

One reason we don’t exercise is because we spend all day hunched over a desk. A great alternative is to invest in a standing desk. These are adjustable for different heights and allow you to work while standing.

Standing for long periods works many muscles of your body. It also allows you to move as you work.

If your office will not allocate the budget for a standing desk, or won’t allow it, you can also opt for a small “under-desk” bike. These allow you to incorporate movement into your life while sitting.

  1. Schedule “movement breaks” throughout the day.

It is easy to get lost in your work, set a timer for a few minutes, ideally every thirty minutes, and do some stretches, yoga poses, push-ups, burpees, etc. Just make sure to not overdo it.

Also, incorporate stretching into your routine. It is just as important as working out!

  1. 6. Go for a walk during lunchtime or after dinner.

Walking is an easy way to incorporate movement into your life. It helps keep your body moving and also gives you a chance to clear your head and take in some fresh air.

7. Sign up for group fitness classes.

Working out with a friend or group is a great way to incorporate movement into your life. It can give you the motivation you need to stay consistent, plus you can encourage each other to keep going when the workout gets difficult.

No more excuses!
